London is a bright and vibrant city with many activities for the culture hungry. One of London's most established sources of entertainment is its vast amount of theatre in the district known as the West End.

With hundreds of theatre shows to choose from in England's capital city, it can be difficult to know what is the best show to see. That is why we have compiled a list of five of London's best shows that are certain to be a sure fire hit with theatregoers.

1- Les Miserables. Now in it's 25th year on the West End, Les Miserables is officially the worlds longest running musical. The show has drawn in over 40 million audience members world wide and has won countless awards. Set in the French revolution, Les Miserables is celebrated for its original score. Songs such as 'I Dreamed a Dream' and 'On My Own' have gone down in musical history.

2- Phantom of the Opera. Like Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera has been running in London for over 25 years and continues to entertain audiences at Her Majesty's Theatre, one of London's grandest performances spaces. The show is celebrated for its heart rendering storyline and breathtaking special effects.

3- The Lion King. Running since 1999, The Lion King is an onstage adaptation of the Walt Disney classic. Suitable for all of the family (ages 5+), audience members will not fail to be blown away by the amazing set and costume design boasted by the show. The images created on stage, along with the musical score, really give the audience a true taste of Africa as a background to Simba's story of growing up.

4- Matilda. Having opened in 2011, Matilda the musical is an adaptation of Roald Dahl's tale of a misunderstood, bright young girl with magical powers. The show appeals to all those still young at heart and has received a wealth of positive reviews and awards. It is worth seeing the show for the magical staging alone.

5- Wicked.  Wicked is another show suitable for the whole family (ages 8+). Having won countless Olivier and Tony Awards, London's production of Wicked continues to wow audiences on a nightly basis. Based on the popular story of The Wizard of Oz, Wicked tells the tale of Elphaba, the 'Wicked Witch', from a radically different perspective. She is not 'Wicked' at all, just a wildly misunderstood teenager who had the misfortune to be born green. Wicked is a moving tale of a teenagers struggle to fit in. With songs like 'Defying Gravity', it is hard not to be moved by this critically acclaimed musical.
